As a person who’s belonged to a gym for the entirety of her adult life, I’ve seen my fair share of January gym-goers. You know the ones—they have the best intentions at the start off the year, when New Year’s Resolutions are being tossed around like nobody’s business. But then February or so rolls around, and the gym gets less and less busy, and the resolutions tend to fall by the wayside.
If all that sounds familiar (and no shame if it does!), we’ve got some simple tips and tricks to help you keep on track all the way through the end of 2013 and beyond.
Keep track. There are countless free online trackers that help you track the progress of your workouts! It’s awesome to see the strides you’ve made. Take advantage of one of those programs or even jot down your daily workouts in a notebook. Challenge yourself to do just a little better each week.
Make it convenient. If a workout is a 30 minute drive, chances are you’re going to bail. Join a gym that’s right by work or home so you don’t have an excuse! Better yet, have a few workout videos on hand in case you just can’t get to the gym.
Squeeze it in. Don’t feel like every workout has to be a marathon. Have 20 minutes? Cool. Hop on that treadmill and go to town.
Don’t set unreachable goals. You’re not going to be doing 100 consecutive push-ups or running a marathon right out of the gate. Set a goal that makes sense for you. My goal this year? One unassisted pull-up. Just one.
Take a class. I love taking classes at the gym, and here’s why: accountability and challenge. You get to know the people in class and you’re missed if you’re not there. Also, classes tend to push you a little harder than you may push yourself, which is never a bad thing.
Reward yourself. Did you reach a goal? Do something awesome for yourself! Get a massage, buy some new running shoes, have a night out. Don’t forget to celebrate the good stuff.
Be afraid (and do it anyway). Lots of folks shy away from working out because they’re intimidated by it. Don’t be. That’s why people work at the gym—to show you the ropes. If you need help, ask!
Keep it simple. A workout can be as simple as taking a Frisbee to the park. Get your family or your pals together and go for a bike ride or walk! It won’t even seem like you’re working out.
Make it affordable. If joining a gym is too pricey, just get a few key pieces and keep them at home. You can get a long way with a set of resistance bands or a medicine ball. Apps like this one are awesome. You can input whatever equipment you have and it will create a custom workout for you.
Just go. Half of the battle is starting. Put on your shoes and walk out the door. You’ll feel better already.
Good luck, and here’s to your health in 2013! Any other awesome tips or tricks for working out? Leave a comment and let us know.
