Download this printable May Day Basket just in time for May 1. When I was a kid, every year we made May Day baskets and brought them to all of the neighborhood kids I knew.

build your own neighborhood – house 12
This week’s printable house is in honor of the good old days. Lately, it seems everywhere I turn I see evidence of a bygone era. Sometimes I wonder if we’re all a little afraid to claim the 21st century for our own.

This week’s printable house features a greenhouse nurturing plants for spring. When I was little, my mom used to get out the grow lights and start a zillion different seeds inside our back sunroom. It always made the end of winter much more exciting.

This week’s printable neighborhood house is in honor of New York. I’ve been dreaming about its neighborhoods and boroughs all week long. There is something so iconic about the idea of a Manhattan neighborhood. Now, I don’t live there, and probably never will. Which is why it probably keeps all of its charm.

house 7 & Alt Summit: the ultimate blogger neighborhood
One of the main goals of The Neighborhood is, of course, to be neighborly. To expand our digital world back out into the real world, and reconnect with those around us on a more meaningful level. It’s such an important concept—and a growing concern—as we become more and more in love with our digital devices. Did you know there was actually a study done that showed a person’s brain chemistry respond to their iPhone with the same emotional responses as they do to their loved ones? We really do love our tech!

Along with the New Year comes the perfect chance for a fresh start: New Year’s Resolutions. I’ve spent years thinking they were a little silly, because frankly, most people break their resolutions within a couple of months anyway. Plus, ideally we should be fixing our bad habits and improving our lives all the time, not waiting for next year, right?

These last few days before Christmas were supposed to be my time to shine. I finally caught up with my freelance work, and all my Christmas shopping is done. It’s time to do fun holiday things with my preschooler: cookie making, snowman building, Santa visiting, and ornament making. Plus, there were some last-minute handmade gifts I’d hoped to make too. I had really big plans.

This week’s free house printable is in honor of snow. Snow brings out a brand new world, doesn’t it? The landscape changes completely, switching to a monochromatic cleanliness you’ll never find in any other season.

Have you put up the Christmas lights outside? Is there a Christmas tree sitting in front of your window? Every year it seems our neighborhood lights up with some holiday cheer a couple of days earlier than it did the year before.

If we were playing word association and you said the word “neighborhood”, the first thing that I would say is my childhood street.

I am a product designer, artist, part-time professor, design and art lover, writer and founder of design blog SmallforBig.com.
I live in St. Paul Minnesota, a wonderful design-friendly city with lots of green spaces and gracious neighborhoods. And no, it’s not a fly-by zone.
My family is always making me laugh. My husband goes for the laughter intentionally, my 3 1/2 year old daughter unintentionally! My every day is better because of them.
I enjoy reading, making anything and everything, designing, art, writing, sweet tooth fixes, piano-playing, blogging, museums, road-tripping, scouring the web for new finds, yoga, and vintage scores.
I’m obsessed with
Finding new creative inspiration and trends.
Finding the many things I lose during the day.
Finding a time machine that will add 10-20 hours to each of my days without adding wrinkles.
Oh, and my iPad.
I collect well-designed shiny objects of all kinds (sometimes only on Pinterest), iPhoneography apps, and Vintage Fisher Price Little People toys for my girl.
I love to try out new ideas.
My neighborhood is sweet, quiet, and safe – with lots of frogs.
I smile because I know there are great big things ahead of me, and I can’t wait to experience all of them.
